A fine pair of mid 19th Century marble dogs based on a Roman copy of a Greek Hellenistic, probably bronze, Molossian Hound, an ancestor of the modern Mastif. A famous Roman example of this model (although lacking a tail) was bought by Henry Constantine Jennings ""A fine dog it was, and a lucky dog was I to purchase it"" in around 1754. Dog Jennings, as he was later to be known, named it the Dog of Alcibiadies Tail.
