With original bronze plate by William Hamlin (diameter 30 cm). The finest 18th century sundials were invariably carved in Portland stone, this rare example, with its original plate, is of square baluster form with minimal decoration. The plate was made by the London optician and mathematical instrument maker William Hamlin, who worked at III Leadenhall Street, London, from around 1793-1811 - apprenticed to Christopher Stedman in 1747 he was known to have been admitted to the Stationers' Guild in 1754.
