A previously unrecorded version of Apollo from the workshops of John Cheere. In classical pose, similar to versions at Anglesey Abbey, Norfolk and Queluz Palace, Portugal. The version here having a good patina with fine detailing to the laurel wreath crown, with the additional attribute of the lyre, here having some remaining traces of what may be the original paint. It is interesting to note that many of these 18th century classical statues were painted white to resemble marble, with the more rustic figures painted with flesh tones and exuberant colours.
