Known to us as snow lanterns, this early 20th century English one legged 'Yukimi - Doro' literally snow viewing lantern, was popular in Japan in the Tokugawa Period (1603-1868) for use in stroll gardens often placed near open reflective water or beneath a weeping tree.
This is a rare example of a Japanese model being made in English stone to supply the British desire for all things Japanese at the turn of the last century.
